N A N O V I S E

It is tough to stay connected with your colleagues in today’s business world. And it is even more crucial that you have a way to keep in touch with your customers. The Centre has come up with a brilliant idea under the “PM-WANI” initiative. This will be a fully functional public Wi-Fi network that would provide easy access to the internet for small businesses and individuals.

This is a unique project which will be implemented in the State of Maharashtra by the Maharashtra State Government. This initiative aims at providing connectivity to all people, irrespective of their economic status and geographical location.

With this, people can connect and share information online without any hassle or cost, provided they have an internet connection of at least 50Mbps and a Wi-Fi access point or router as per their requirements.

The main objective of this project is to provide access to quality broadband internet facilities so that people from remote areas can share information, communicate with their colleagues and neighbors, participate in online discussions and do online banking conveniently without any expenses or complications. The PM WANI scheme was estimated to reach 2 lakh villages across the state and will be implemented over three years starting April 2011.

The Centre's Wi-Fi Scheme

The Centre’s PM-WANI project will boost the use of broadband internet services across the country. The Centre is laying the foundation for a Nationwide Public WiFi Network (PNWFN) with an initial focus on the service providers.

The PM-WANI project is being implemented in three phases and will be rolled out over five years – Phase I, between July 2017 and June 2020. In Phase I, there will be 1,500 hotspots across India with a coverage of more than 90% of the country’s urban population. This phase is expected to bring in at least 1 billion data hours annually. Phase II will roll out by June 2020 and cover 100% of India’s urban population.

The programme will provide a high-speed internet network and provide mobile data services via a 3G/4G mobile phone network and WiFi access points to extend connectivity to remote areas where broadband services are not readily available, such as villages and schools.

Phase III will start from June 2023 and cover 1 lakh hotspots by 2022 with more than 95% coverage.

According to an official release from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, such infrastructure development can be considered part of the rollout under the Digital India initiative, which aims at replicating high-speed broadband internet services across all parts of India by 2022.

How will PM-WANI scheme work

This week, a new scheme will be launched in Delhi that aims to provide public Wi-Fi hotspots to all citizens at no cost. The project is being called PM-WANI, or the National Public Wi-Fi Hotspot Network.

The scheme will provide internet access to everyone and is expected to be the first of its kind in India.

The project aims to address the problem of limited internet services in rural areas, which has been cited as one of the reasons why many people don’t have access to basic internet services like e-mail, Facebook and other social media.

With Wi-Fi networks providing high-speed internet for a price below 1 rupee per hour, PMWANI is expected to help fill up Delhi’s digital gap. According to a recent study by Airtel Digital India and Google, India could have over 6 million internet users by 2020 if proper measures are taken.

Boost to Ease of Doing Business

There’s no single reason for public Wi-Fi hotspots. They are not a gift from the government. They are not only a fast way to connect to email, social media and public data but also a platform for entrepreneurs to provide connectivity for their clients. Their one value is that they can be built into business premises.

The PM-WANI project was launched by the prime minister’s office (PMO) in July 2017 to provide broadband internet access to all its users at low cost. It will be operated via state-owned BharatNet, an agency of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which will provide access to satellite connection through wireless base stations deployed across India by various telecom service providers (TSPs).

The scheme has been approved by the telecom regulator Trai and is scheduled for implementation from March 2018.

The project will have three phases: Phase 1, from December 2017 to March 2018; Phase 2, from April 2018 to June 2018; and Phase 3, from July 2018 onwards, when peak summer season kicks in. According to DoT sources, around 50 lakh base stations will be deployed at 20 lakh locations across India during this year’s peak season through BharatNet’s wireless network – Bharat Broadband Network (BBN). The total number of base stations is expected to reach between 200 lakh and 300 lakh by 2020 – a considerable increase over the initial target of 100 lakh base stations deployed earlier in this phase. According to DoT sources, around 400 private sector TSPs have agreed to make use of BharatNet and new services like MyWiFiFone that provides free Wi-Fi hotspots through mobile apps and SMS alerts about available hotspots in specific areas in India and abroad.

In addition, other TSPs have agreed on making use of Mobile Internet service – MMSI (Mobile Multimedia Subscriber Identity) Service which will allow users to upload images or videos on their mobile phones through third-party service providers who have agreed on providing MMSI service along with free Wi-Fi hotspot (where provided) in selected areas across India through BharatNet network service provider’s equipment like Wireless Broadband GPRS Support Device (WBSD), Wireless Broadband Base Station Device (WBBSD), etc.

Objectives and Benefits of PM-WANI scheme

In 2014, the government had declared that it wanted to create a nationwide-scale public Wi-Fi network to promote internet connectivity in rural India. The government has now announced that it will make public Wi-Fi interoperable with all the major telecom operators through the PM-WANI scheme.

The Prime Minister’s National Wi-Fi Interoperability Initiative (PM-WANI) will provide a boost to ease of doing business and boost the proliferation of broadband internet services.

“We are committed to providing affordable and high-quality broadband connectivity through our networks,” said Mukesh Sinha, Telecom Secretary, Department of Posts.

The PM WANI initiative will standardise innovative technologies used by mobile operators and radio equipment manufacturers across all regions of India to enable wide-scale adoption of Wi-Fi bands for mobile connectivity services.

The PM WANI programme will also facilitate interoperability among various regional players in order to increase the overall availability of broadband services across India.

The project aims to enhance economic activity by enabling broadband connectivity in remote and low-density rural areas with limited access to broadband connections in major cities.

It will also ensure security for users and data transmission traffic that may be sensitive or confidential.

As part of an initiative being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSTY), “the scheme aims at providing high-quality data transmission services using Wi-Fi systems across India,” said Pradip Gangwal, Chairman Joint Action Group (JAG), Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MoCIT). This project is expected to go live from January 2017 onwards.”
